Mallorca

3 days trip

We arrived at midnight, collected the rented car and decided to start with a night walk in La Palma. We’ve been a little bit surprised that there was no shop/bar/pub open at night. It looked as all was closed before midnight.

La Palma

The Cathedral of Santa Maria of Palma was built in years 1229 – 1601 on the site of a Moorish-era mosque. “the cathedral is 121 metres long, 40 metres wide and its nave is 44 metres tall. By way of comparison, the height of the central nave reaches 33m in Notre Dame de Paris, 38m in Reims, 42m in Notre-Dame d’Amiens and 48m in Saint-Pierre de Beauvais, the highest of all Gothic cathedrals.”

Mondragó Natural Park

The beautiful beach Cala S’Amarador is a part of protected area – beautiful sand, beautiful and warm water thanks to the bay. It’s 1 hr to get there from La Palma or the airport by a car. The road is well signposted (Follow the brown signs “s’Amarador” and the green ”Mondrago Parc” by the end of the route) and takes to the Mondrago car park. The car park operates from 9am – 6pm but the gate is open from 6pm to 9am therefore it is possible to come earlier, leave later or just stay overnight. The car park fees are 6 Euro for a car and 10 Euro for a caravan/van for all day. Toilets at the car park are open only during the parking’s operating hours but open 24/7 on the beach.

S’Amarador Beach

one of the trails in Mondrago Park

There are a few trials in the park, very nice view points and information boards along the paths. It is possible to walk along the coast and very quickly het to the other popular beach – Mondrago. At the two beaches available are: toilets, a food kiosk (cold and hot drinks, food, smoothies, fruits and fruit juices), sun beds under nice umbrellas but the price is 15Euro per day and lifeguards.

There are another two small, rocky beaches Caló des Borgit and Calo d’en Perdiu.

CAVES

The formation of the Balearic islands is estimated to have taken place around 150 million years ago. At first, Mallorca was joined to the Spanish peninsula as an underwater island before its present configuration came into being.

The limestones, which predominate throughout Mallorca, are readily water-soluble, and have given rise to extensive areas of karst. You can find many caves which are accessible, some of them are very popular tourist spots.

The most popular and for sure worth visiting are Drach Caves with Lake Martel, which is one of the largest subterranean lakes in the world official website . But after reading rewievs we decided to visit Coves d’Arta and I’m sure we did the right thing.

The road to the coves is beautiful, the caves’ entrance and exit are in the sea cliff facing the water.
