Split

We liked the old town – very nice, lots of going on during the night. Set up by Greeks in 3rd or 2nd century BCE, it became a prominent settlement around 650 CE when it succeeded the ancient capital of the Roman province of Dalmatia (wikipedia). The remains of Diocletian’s Palace (built in 305 AD) are part of the historic core of Split, which in 1979 was listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.
